For most local searches, the map pack is the whole game. Three businesses. A map. A phone icon. The rest of the page might as well not exist.

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is how you get into that pack. Claiming it is the start, not the finish. In Los Angeles, where dozens of similar shops sit within a few miles, incomplete profiles lose to complete ones every week.

Here are the five gaps we see most often when we score local businesses.

1. Wrong or vague categories

Primary category tells Google what you are. Secondary categories tell Google what else you do. If the primary is too broad (“Store” instead of “Hair salon”) or wrong, you compete in the wrong pool and lose to specialists.

Fix: Match the category to the search people actually use. One primary. A few honest secondaries. Do not stuff every option available.

2. Hours, phone, and address drift

Google trusts consistency. If your GBP says you close at 6, your site says 7, and a directory says 5, the system hedges. Wrong phone numbers kill conversions even when you rank. Holiday hours left stale make you look closed when you are open.

Fix: Pick one source of truth. Push the same name, address, phone, and hours everywhere. Update holidays before they hit.

3. Thin photos and an empty cover story

Profiles with a default map pin and two dark photos lose to profiles with exterior shots, interior shots, work-in-progress, and a clear logo. People decide with their eyes before they call.

Fix: Real photos from the business. Exterior for wayfinding. Interior for trust. Team or product for personality. Refresh quarterly, not once in 2019.

4. Reviews that stall

Review velocity and recency matter more than a dusty five-star average from three years ago. Competitors with a steady drip of recent reviews climb past stronger businesses that stopped asking.

Fix: Make asking easy and normal. Reply to every review, good and bad, like a human. Never buy reviews. Never ignore the bad ones.

5. No posts, no Q&A, no services list

A profile that never updates looks abandoned. Google and customers both notice. Empty Services and Products fields waste free ranking and conversion space. Unanswered Q&A leaves competitors or random users defining you.

Fix: Weekly or biweekly posts when you have something real: an offer, a new hire, a seasonal hour change. Fill Services with plain language. Seed honest Q&A and answer anything public that appears.

How this fits the rest of the footprint

GBP does not live alone. Your website should reinforce the same name, city, and services. Search results should not contradict the profile. AI systems that cite local businesses lean on the same public facts. When the profile is sharp but the site is a mess, or the reverse, the whole system underperforms. That is why we treat the footprint as one system, not five separate projects.

If you want the wider framing, start with why findability beats quality until the customer walks in.
